Looking Back:The Proposal

Hello world! We have finally decided to join the blogger craze. We would like to start by recapping some fun memories of what has happened in our lives up to this point. Since this is our family blog, we will start with how we got started. So our first story will be the proposal! But before we get into that, we should give you a little background. Virginia and Scott met shortly after Virginia's mission. She came home from her mission on October 22, 2009. Upon arriving home, she did the standard "give a talk in church" talk. Scott had moved into the Singles Ward that Virginia left from. Since Virginia was baptized at age 20, the Singles Ward was like her home ward. Anyway, as Scott sat in the audience listening to Virginia's homecoming talk he thought, "I should to ask that girl out!" He was very persistent and their first date was on November 6th. Virginia was a bit nervous about jumping into the dating scene, and still a bit scared of boys. So needless to say she totally freaked out when Scott held her hand on the first date (until she realized that she liked him holding her hand). Things progressed quickly as they realized that Virginia was scheduled to start school at BYU-Idaho in January. In fact, one of the crucial moments was when Scott asked Virginia, "If I were to ask you to marry me right now, what would you say?" Virginia responded, "Yes...wait...really? Wow! I guess I would say yes!" Needless to say, they quickly decided that this wasn't just a fleeting relationship and they didn't want to do the whole long-distance relationship. Virginia gave up school, and decided to stay in Washington to see where this whole thing would go.

As things progressed, Scott invited Virginia to fly
down to Utah and spend Christmas with his family. Since Virginia had just returned from her mission, she couldn't see leaving her family. So they decided to spend Christmas Eve with her family and take an early flight Christmas morning to Utah. Let's just say that was one exhausting Christmas! But everything got better as they got some sleep Christmas night and the day after Christmas turned out to be quite magical indeed. Virginia and Scott decided to do a temple session at the Draper Utah Temple that day. Of course, it was wonderful, as the temple always is! (It is funny to note that out of the many temples in Utah, Scott and Virginia happened to choose to do a session in the temple that would be closest to them later on when the moved to Utah...coincidence? I think not!) Anyway, as they left the temple, they headed to have a nice Italian dinner at Johnny Carino's, a nearby restaurant. They enjoyed a lovely meal, in which Virginia ended up stealing Scott's dinner because his was tastier (this should have been a sign to him as to how many meals would be enjoyed in the future). Anyway, they left dinner and headed to the Salt Lake Temple to see the beautiful light display that occurs every Christmas.

It was a very cold night so they bundled up and held hands as they enjoyed the lights. There is a beautiful reflecting pool right in front of the Salt Lake Temple. Scott took Virginia by the hand and they squeezed in between all the other people to get a close look at the Nativity scene that was floating on the water. Virginia took a moment and asked some strangers to take their picture in front of the pool. Then as they continued  looking at the temple, Scott started to tell Virginia how much he loved her. He explained that he wanted to love her for eternity. Then there was a bit of a long pause. Scott says that at that moment he wanted to get down on his knee and propose, but there wasn't room because of all the people. He wasn't sure what to do, so he just remained quiet as he tried to figure out what to do next. Virginia realized something was off, and asked if he would like to go look at more lights. Scott then let out a sigh of relief, agreed that he would like to do that, took her by the hand, and as they were only three feet from the crowd, he dropped to his knee and said, "Remember what I said about wanting to love you for eternity? Well, will you marry me?" Scott was a bit nervous and as he opened the ring box, Virginia realized that the box was upside down. So she giggled, flipped the box around, and squealed, "Yes!" Then she jumped into his arms and gave him a big hug. Just a moment later, the stranger who had taken their picture earlier said, "Did you guys just get engaged?!?!" They responded, "Yes!" And she said, "Do it again! And I'll take another picture!" The pictures here are from the spot that he proposed at. Then they later got another in front of the temple and went back to Scott's parents' house to tell them the good news.

So let's recap. The first date was November 6th, 2009 and the engagement was December 26th, 2009. Wow! That was quick. But I guess it is true what they say, "When you know, you know!" Scott and Virginia went along to make plans for their wedding which was March 27th, 2010....but that is another story! Welcome to our blog...we hope you enjoy!
